Oracle WebLogic Migration Overview

WebLogic is integral to the company’s European business operations, hosting application services depended upon by thousands of users across the continent, and because Computacenter applications are built and deployed via a proprietary platform that requires a specific version of WebLogic Server, an upgrade to their core systems necessitated a mandatory Oracle Fusion Middleware upgrade from WebLogic 11g to 12c.

Because of the narrow margins for error, and the need for specialist WebLogic Server knowledge, Computacenter brought in c2b2 to design and deliver a watertight implementation plan aligned with hard release deadlines across four European regions.

With business-critical services at risk, our middleware consultancy team undertook a full architectural discovery assessment, during which time they quickly identified project delivery priorities, key stakeholder concerns, and gained a comprehensive understanding of how the WebLogic domains and server environments were structured.

We then created a release roadmap designed not only to implement the upgrades within the scheduled downtime, but which included comprehensive scripting, testing, troubleshooting, patching, and production configuration processes – as well as a WebLogic roll-back plan for each phase of the release.

By creating a scripted release process, we were able to minimise risk through simple automation – preventing errors from entering the project. Not only did this enable us to easily manage an unexpected roll-back, but ensured that success was replicated through each regional release. It also meant that Computacentre would be able to reuse those processes in any future roll-outs delivered by the in-house team.

Case Study

Computacenter

Because of the narrow margins for error and the need for specialist WebLogic Server knowledge, Computacenter brought in c2b2 to design and deliver a watertight implementation plan aligned with hard release deadlines across four European regions.

c2b2 not only understood the scope and importance of the WebLogic upgrade, but created an implementation plan completely in line with our strategic needs. Despite challenging schedules and the need for an unexpected roll-back, they delivered all four releases with complete success.
